What is Eczema

Eczema and dermatitis are actually the same thing. Skin inflammation is usually characterised by swelling, redness, stretch marks and itching in its acute form. In the chronic form, regular rubbing of the skin through scratching and itching causes thickening or ‘lichenification’, scaling and post-inflammatory darkening of the skin.

Causes of Eczema

Eczema can become extremely worse for a time, usually for a specific trigger. A wide range of emotional and environmental factors that affect eczema consist of the following:

  • Allergies to dust mites, pets, metals artificial fibres and other substances.
  • Food allergies such as wheat, nuts and dairy products.
  • Sweating due to warm temperature or exercise.
  • Stress that forms a positive feedback loop, as eczema flare-up can be the reason for more stress.
  • Bathing products that may dry and irritate the skin thus, leading to crack around eczema sites.

Tretment for Eczema

There are different treatments available that can be applied as separate treatments or in combination with one another. These may range from emollients for use in bath or shower, medicinal moisturisers that ease acute itchiness and immunosuppressants or weak topical steroids for strong cases. These steroids are generally applied to the skin externally that decreases itching and inflammation without skin thinning. This will enable your skin to heal properly.

Successful treatment results in full elimination of the symptoms of eczema and can thus, provide relief from irritation and discomfort.
