Treatment Procedures For Scleroderma

A wide range of treatments that are used to relieve the symptoms of scleroderma. There is currently no cure for scleroderma. Instead, the symptoms can be reduced using different medications and procedures.

Treatment methods include;

  • Use Of Medications And Moisturiser

Medicines like calcipotriene, potent Corticosteroids, menthol, etc. can be used to relieve symptoms like dry skin, itching, swelling of thick skin and calcium deposits on the skin.

  • Treatment Through Therapy

Therapy like PUVA therapy, UVA -1 phototherapy, laser therapy and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment can be prescribed to relieve symptoms, especially where the scleroderma infection has eaten deep into the tissues or organs. IPL is used to bleach areas that are discoloured due to morphea. On the other hand, laser therapy is used to get rid of visible blood vessels.

Scleroderma can cause permanent disfigurement of the skin, although the hardened skin can clear out within a period of 3 – 5 years. Early treatment is the key to ensuring the tissues are salvaged and remain intact without being damaged.
